Timelines are essential when the chronological order of events is significant to your case. The biggest mistake made with timelines is putting too much information on them. Try not to use full sentences. Boil the information down to just the main points, said in as few words as possible. If practicable, use icons to make the timeline more interesting and magnetic covers to control the information given. (see sample timeline below.)
